York (2023).

Changpeng Li's works reflect on how the image-centric era has transformed our way of seeing.

The media's lightning-fast production of images has compressed our viewing time, leading to a

visual experience that's forced into an endless scroll, stripping away the depth of our gaze. As

ways of seeing become increasingly flattened, the artist seeks to explore the resulting changes

through the medium of painting.

Li's paintings depict media images as a form of camera film. By overlaying perspectives from

different image mediums, he invites viewers to recall the sense of alienation, rediscovering those

messages that were once forgotten or marginalized. In this process, images from the media are

taken back into the darkroom for “development” through painting, revealing their different

underlying discursive structures.
