Duran|Mashaal is pleased to present a group exhibition co-curated by Director Sarah Mashaal and Brooklyn based artist Mathew Tom. Featuring the works of Florence Solis (Canada), Hannah Lim (England), Gloria Houng (US), Phuong Nyugen (Canada), Fabian Jean (Canada), Winnie Sidharta (US), Mathew Tom (US), Kyung Soon Park (Canada) and Tuan Vu (Canada).
In some of the works, the artists' vague childhood memories infiltrates the present in which they document ambiguous interpretations of emotionally charged recollections. In Florence Solis' work, Filipino myths, folklore, and superstitions, serve as a visual translation of her personal experiences viewed through the lens of diaspora.
In Hannah Lim's work, whose research and practice has come to engage with the colonial connotations of the relationship between the East and the West being of both mixed Singaporean and British heritage. These connotations are most evident in themes such as Orientalism and its relationship to Chinoiserie. In Sidharta's work, she focuses on the distinct elements from Chinese Wan Li Pottery (of the Ming dynasty) that have become a subject of convoluted artistic and stylistic ownership, marked by a dark history of colonization.
Gloria Houng's series of photographs is a performative exploration of the juxtaposition of childhood memories of playful attachment to the Japanese Sanrio fictional character-toy Hello Kitty with "adult" investigations into Asian women stereotypes, identity, and representation. Slightly absurd and mildly menacing, these works attempt to invoke a hypothetical void-space between dreams and nightmares.
In Mathew Tom's work, he seeks to incorporate images that hold symbolic significance for both Eastern and Western cultures, inviting viewers to consider the ways in which different cultural traditions can be brought together to create something new and meaningful.
